Do you ever get the feeling that the Lib dem group at the Assembly are a little unhappy with their leader?
Peter Black AM's blog post on his leader is testimony to the fact that he wants Mike German to go, and to go sharpish. Wait until October? No way, that's far too long a wait to get Kirsty Williams AM in there, and leading the 6 strong team of Lib dems at the National Assembly!
At the end of the day, he could easily have stood against Mike German as leader after the Assembly elections, but he chose not to stand- he and others sat back and allowed Mike German to carry on. If he was that ineffectual a leader, then why not stand against him?
I presume there was no leadership contest after the National Assembly elections, as Kirsty Williams was not popular amongst party members who wanted the deal with Plaid and the Tories to work. Kirsty was seen as trying to undermine that deal. Whether this was a play at the leadership is any one's guess.
Nevertheless, Mike German (if he keeps to his words) will stand down in October. Plenty of time for some Labour party leadership hopefuls to try and shore up a possible coalition deal with a fresh, new lib dem leader ( could it possibly happen?...)

Rali ym Merthyr yn erbyn glo brig/ Merthyr rally against open cast
Dyma cwpwl o luniau o'r brotest yn erbyn glo brig a ddigwyddodd ym Merthyr ar ddydd Sadwrn. Roedd y rali, y cyfarfod cyhoeddus a'r gig yn lwyddiant mawr ( er gwaetha'r sylw pitw a rhoddwyd iddo gan y BBC ac eraill) ac mae nifer o bwyntiau gweithredu gen i nawr yn dilyn o'r cyfarfod agored am y ffordd ymlaen. Rwyf yn bwriadu ysgrifennu at Jane Davidson i ofyn iddi wir ystyried cynnwys Ffos y Fran o fewn y buffer zone 500 m a fydd o bosib yn cael ei gyflwyno ymhen ychydig. Mae'n annerbyniol bod y glo brig yn yr ardal mor agos i dai pobl lleol. Mae son am fwy o glo brig ym Merthyr hefyd nawr, yn benodol ble mae fy rhieny yn byw yn Heolgerrig. Mae'n bwysig os oes rhaid cael glo brig yn yr ardal bod y buffer zone yn cael ei weithredu. Mae pobl wedi bod yn aros rhy hir am hwn, ac mae'n bwysig i weithredu yn awr.

Here are a couple of pictures of the protest against open cast mining which was held in Merthyr on Saturday. The rally, the public meeting and the gig were a success ( regardless of the lack of coverage given to it by the BBC etc) and I took quite a lot of actions points from the meeting. I intend to write to Jane Davidson to raise with her again the fact that retrospective planning should be granted to Ffos y Fran in relation to the 500m buffer zone. It is unacceptable that this opencasting is taking place so close to people's homes. There are talks of further open cast developments in the area also- namely in Heolgerring where my parents live and where I grew up. Its important that if there has to be open cast in the area that the buffer zone is implemented. People have waited far too long for this, and we must act now.
Having listened to Huw Lewis's rousing speech lately at the Assembly with regards the buffer zone I thought that he would have turned up for the events in his area, but that wasn't to be. Jill Evans MEP, Leanne Wood AM and Mike German were amongst the politicians present. George Monbiot, a Journalist and climate change campaigner spoke at the rally, as did local campaigners, and Gordon James from Friends of the Earth.

When should you call it a day? The story of Campbell and German
News flash today is that Mike German says that he intends to remain as leader of the Assembly Lib dem group until 2008. Now, there must have been group discussion on this, as only a few weeks ago Peter Black was adamant that a leadership contest was needed- a 'fresh mandate' for a leader was the words he used if I can recall.
This will now give Kirsty Williams enough time to shore up support with members after a bruising few months. Or, then again, there could be a Kirsty vs Randerson battle ahead... if you're bothered to keep an interest until then.
It is a concern about what will happen to the Lib dems in Wales up until 2008. They do appear a little lack lustre at the moment as a group, and have little in common to promote until the leadership battle commences in 2008. This is not to say that individuals are not hard working or energised by their role, but a leadership contest now might have been just what they needed.
Anyway, the Lib dem problems in Wales are arguably out done by the UK leadership issue. Today's Independent reports that senior Lib dems have allegedly set until March next year for Campbell to improve his ratings in the polls or make ' a dignified exit.' It was only a matter of time before the cracks started to appear again on this particular issue. The fact that the political debate has now been polarised between the Tories and Labour makes the Lib dem situation look even worse in reality. That and the fact that the other two parties are fighting for the middle ground in British politics, which has again led to a squeeze in support for the Lib dems.
There will, more than likely, be another two years until the General election. Can the party afford to wait around for a renewal in leadership until then?

Continued talks with Labour 'predictable'?
So we decided to continue negotiations with Labour. Some of you, namely Peter Black, is not surprised. He seems to think that this was in fact 'predictable'. I have to disagree. If we had thought that Labour were failing to take the discussions seriously, then I am convinced AM's would have been quick off the mark in refusing any deal with Labour yesterday.
As it stands, the document with Labour needs to be developed, but does show signs that there is at least a possibility of creating a robust agreement that can be taken back to the table for the AM's and National Exec to either accept or reject. The other agreement, the All Wales accord is still there for contemplation. I don't want to jeopardise any discussions so I won't go in to the content of the document for now( *the red-green document for your information)
Much has been made of the fact that Mike German is keeping a keen eye on Plaid's manoeuvrings so that he can assess whether or not the three party coalition is still a possibility. Rumour has it that Mike German will go straight back to Rhodri Morgan if Plaid is serious about the Red- Green deal. I think that if this happens, it only goes to show that there is no clear strategy guiding the leader of the Lib dems. Mike German should be careful what he does. After all, we all know that he claimed to be able to carry his party through a 'yes' vote for a three party coalition, except this was famously scuppered by his very own National Executive. It seems to me that it will be impossible for German to talk to Labour without another Extraordinary Lib dem Conference to decide upon the best course of action.
Discussions continue in the meantime. I wouldn't want to predict an outcome at the moment, because I'm amazed how quickly the political scene has changed since the election.
***A quick response to Betsan Powys's remark that Gareth Jones left early from the meeting yesterday. I think this was an attempt at a hint of disagreement from Gareth Jones. Just to set things straight- we had an Assembly Member group meeting in the morning, and a National Executive meeting in the afternoon. AM's were free to leave at lunch, but most ( who wanted to hear the views of the Exec, or who didn't have anything better to do!) stayed on. So there was nothing to read into Gareth's actions at all.

Looking to Aber for answers
In between the sudden bursts of rain today, Dai Lloyd and myself did a door to door street surgery in Swansea. Lots of issues to pick up on, which can only be a good thing. Obviously many people were out working, so when I did enter conversation with a few people, I braved my way to asking about their views on a coalition:
' Just get on with it, and do the job' said one man.
' It's chaos' another said, without hesitation.
' We need a change from Labour', a middle aged mand confessed( whose dog was trying to play ball with me despite my not so friendly relationship with such animals!)
' I don't really take an interest. I haven't got time.' Bored response.
' Your not thinking of working with the Tories, are you?'............
And that was about it in terms of variety of opinion. It gives you a broad enough idea, but obviously it isn't scientific!
Lets hope that we can make progress tomorrow so that the coalition question is finally answered. With Labour leaks outlining hesitation at a deal with Plaid, I'm not exactly sure what will be put in front of us at Aberystwyth tomorrow in terms of concrete suggestions for Government. Mike German and Rhodri may talk yet, which could put us all back to where we thought we were at the end of the election!
In the meantime, I can imagine that Rhodri Morgan has a lot of people to speak to and to persuade if, and only if, they are serious about working with Plaid.

Efallai bydd sgwrs rhwng Mike German a Rhodri, a fydd yn ein dychweled i'n sefyllfa wedi'r etholiad.Yn y cyfasmer, mae rhaid i Rhodri Morgan siarad gyda nifer fawr o bol a'r darbwyll o os ydynt o ddifrif am gydweithio gyda Plaid.

A week is a long time in politics...............
They say a week is a long time in politics. After my short experience as an AM, I think I'd say an hour is a long time in Welsh politics, especially if you assess this in terms of last night's Lib dem drama!
You all know where I stand on the issue of coalition (the Western Mail highlights this, but its news is unfortunately very out of date today), but I am perplexed by the Lib dems. Totally perplexed. They suspended talks with Labour to pursue talks with Plaid and the Tories. Negotiations took place, with Mike German seemingly either oblivious to opposition in his own party, or in denial of that opposition so as to pursue his dream of being a Cabinet Minister( again).
The Lib dems have some serious issues to address- leadership being its main priority. I must say, having seen how the Lib dems have acted, a Rainbow coalition would have been far from stable from the outset. I don't think Peter Black could stomach giving Mike German a Ministerial position, which is one of the reasons, (or the only reason?) why I believe that they are in this mess right now.
One thing is sure, we have to work through these next few days to get a deal. I don't believe that suspending talks with Labour was wise tactially for us, but that is neither here nor there at this point.
We must talk with Labour at this crucial stage, and re-ignite the red- green option. We will have to encourage Labour to play ball now. Whether they will co-operate with us is another issue altogether.

Rydych i gyd yn gwybod lle rwyf yn sefyll ar glymbaid enfys (mae'r Western Mail yn tanlinellu hyn, newyddion braidd yn hen heddiw), ond ni allaf ddeall y Lib Dems. Wedi gohirio trafodaethau gyda Llafur, i ymroddi i drafodaethau gyda Plaid a'r Toriaid, doedd Mike German ddim yn cydnabod y gwrthwynebiad yn ei blaid, efallai i ganlyn y freuddwyd o fod yn Weinidog, eto.Mae rhaid i'r Dem Rhydd wynebu rhai problemau mawr, gan flaenoriaethu arweinyddiaeth.
O weld sut maent yn ymddwyn, ni fyddai clymblaid enfys wedi bod yn sefydog iawn o'r cychwyn. Dwi ddim yn credu fod gan Peter Black y stumog i roi Gweinidogaeth ar blat i Mike German. Un o'r rhesymau maent yn y fath lanast.Yn sicr, yn y dyddiau i ddod rhaid gweithio yn galed i gael cytundeb. Nid oedd gohirio trafodaethau gyd Llafur yn symudiad tactegol ar ein rhan, ond dydi hyn o ddim gwahaniaeth rwan.
Rhaid i ni drafod gyda Llafur ar yr adeg yma, ac ail-danio'r ddewis Plaid-Llafur. Rhaid ysgogi Llafur i chwarae'r gem rwan. Ond, a fydd y blaid yna yn cydweithio?

Lib dems sell out on key Assembly election pledge.
So the Lib dems have already sold out on a key election pledge, it seems. During the Lib dems campaign launch yesterday, Mike German, the Lib dem Leader at the Assembly went back on his claims that any future coalition with Labour would mean that they would have to sign up to PR in local Government.
Mike German said that all the party's manifesto priorities would be up for discussion following the election. Nevertheless, he has been known to have said on many occasions that PR in Local Government would be a prerequisite to entering any negotiations on coalition.
The Lib dems have already compromised their core beliefs. Surely, if Mike German is serious about governing, he should lay out clear commitments on behalf of the Lib dem group?Commitments which would undoubtedly shape their period in Government?
But then again, perhaps they want power for power's sake alone. I wouldn't be surprised.
