Lib dems sell out on key Assembly election pledge.

So the Lib dems have already sold out on a key election pledge, it seems. During the Lib dems campaign launch yesterday, Mike German, the Lib dem Leader at the Assembly went back on his claims that any future coalition with Labour would mean that they would have to sign up to PR in local Government.

Mike German said that all the party's manifesto priorities would be up for discussion following the election. Nevertheless, he has been known to have said on many occasions that PR in Local Government would be a prerequisite to entering any negotiations on coalition.

The Lib dems have already compromised their core beliefs. Surely, if Mike German is serious about governing, he should lay out clear commitments on behalf of the Lib dem group?Commitments which would undoubtedly shape their period in Government?

But then again, perhaps they want power for power's sake alone. I wouldn't be surprised.

As the pledge on PR for local government is in the manifesto then clearly it is there on the table in any future talks. Rather interestingly, none of the Plaid leadership have ever said anything about PR for local government in the context of partnership negotiations.

because we have many more red line issues... You went all out to say that there would be no compromise on one thing specifically- PR in Local Government. That is the point I am making in the blog.

PR remains a red line issue for us.
In the original interview well before Xmas where Mike made the commitment what he said was that we will put in place a raft of policies on which we will negotiate any partnership agreement. At that moment however the only policy we have that we can say for certain will be in the manifesto is PR in local government and that this will feature highly in any negotiations. That has not changed.

'PR remains a red line issue for us.'

Can you be quoted on that? To be fair, the Western Mail article doesn't read like that at all.

Does German know what Black is saying behind his back?

This is hardly a private place it is a public forum and therefore everything I have written is in the public domain. Mike and I are agreed on this.
