Labour meltdown in Scotland

I think that this SNP billboard ad is very effective and simple. It defines the difference between their priorities for Government, and Labour who wish to invest billions in renewing the trident nuclear programme.

It seems that Labour are in meltdown in Scotland, what with Labour considering to move operations to develop Trident from it's Scottish base to Devon due to mounting opposition in the country to new nuclear arms, and following the latest revelation that Labour in Scotland have used high ranking party officials posing as members of the public in their party political broadcast!

I've been watching some of the BBC Scotland election coverage when I find the time, and I must say it's quite exciting, especially given that the SNP are doing so well in all the polls. Independence is obviously a hot election topic. We will know soon after May the 3rd whether the SNP's hopes of initiating a referendum on the issue will become a reality.

Good luck to Alex Salmond and the SNP. I just hope that this quote in today's Scotland on Sunday isn't true though:
"the politician who Salmond will most copy, his allies predict, is none other than Rhodri Morgan, Labour's Welsh First Minister. "

in what context will he most copy Rhodri Morgan? I can't imagine that Alex Salmond would do such a thing myself

bethan,

i've always voted plaid, but i'm increasingly disillusioned as the party seems to be moving further and further away from independence. now that the SNP in Scotland is winning the argument, why aren't plaid being more forceful in their belief in independence for wales.

i'll either be voting libdem or staying at home as it is. if only ieuan was more of an assertive nationalist. we could have a free a Wales free of trident.

I would disagree that we are moving away from Independence. All we are saying as a party is that currently we are aspiring to a full legislative Parliament to make a difference for Wales. You must admit that Scotland is far ahead of us in the Constitutional debate, and a Parliament along Scottish lines is our current goal.

You are entitled to your opinion on Ieuan Wyn Jones, but at the end of the day, we are a Nationalist party and we are proud of that. Labour uses the word 'nationalist' as a swear word in the valleys, while I see the concept as a positive thing- a chance to run our own country, and make our own decisions free of London’s chains.

Yes, the SNP has shown that we must be confident in our aspirations to rule our own country. We have been ruled by British Governments for far too long. Governments that have not and will not put the people of Wales first.

Plaid is the only alternative to New Labour in Wales. I sincerely hope that I, and Plaid, through our hard work and campaigning, can encourage you to vote on May the 3rd.

Glas, I remember a letter to The Daily Mirror shortly after Thatcher won in 1979. It said "until Labour gets truly Socialist policies, I shall vote Conservative"

That seemed to defy logic. In the same way if you want independence, then there is only one party who can bring it. If other Plaid supporters failed to vote for Plaid, all you would end up with is less Plaid representation and independence off the agenda.

Alex Salmond isn't winning because of independence. If he were he would call a referendum straight away. He isn't. He wants a full parliament in which to convince the electorate. He's winning because he's the alternative.

If you live in South Wales West, I implore you to vote for Plaid Cymru. There is little doubt that the Tory vote will improve. What the Plaid position is, is unclear from the only poll conducted. But Plaid were only 4000 ahead of the Tories in 2003.

I've ummed and arred over how to cast my vote this time. I was thinking of voting Liberal Democrat too, but I've reached the conclusion that a vote for anyone other than Plaid and we may wake up to find Dai Lloyd out and 2 Tory AMs elected. I'm a socialist, you're a nationalist. Do either of us want that ?

thanks bethan,

i'd don't agree with tony benn much, but i do agree with some comment he made about politicians who are signposts and those that are weathercocks. signposts are politicians who show leadership and take the public on a journey, weathercocks are the ones who respond to whatever the prevailing political climate it is. i do think that on freedom from london, the snp are signposters and plaid's leadership are weathercocks. the people of wales need politicians of strength, statesmen who can articulate the case for a free wales like saunders lewis and gwynfor did all those years ago. independence shouldnt just be a 'positive concept' - it should up upfront and on top everything the party does.

Left field. This I agree with. The SNP are offering a clear vision on a wealth of different policies, and yes, are offering an alternative to the tired Labour administration in Scotland. ...
As we are doig as Plaid here in Wales- by offering an alternative to Labour in Wales.

The really great thing about these billboards is that they're springing up everywhere! Labour can only offer "Break up Britain, End Up Broke"... pretty poor stuff.
