New term, new ideas?

I am sitting in the Senedd for the first full session of the Assembly. I'm finding the key pad quite hard to use, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Rhodri Morgan and Ieuan Wyn Jones have spoken about the programme for the year- Rhodri outlining his party's ideas, Ieuan noting that we have not had sufficient debate, and that Rhodri has sought to communicate his vision via the press. Nick Bourne is now speaking about the issue, and it's getting quite animated... He's saying that the lack of consensus politics already loud and clear, and so on......

There will be much more work for AM's now due to the new powers. I am especially looking forward to the petitions aspect of the new powers, whereby the public will be allowed to text/email in new policy ideas and initiatives to the Presiding Officer for discussion. I think that this new concept could be a good starting point for a cross party youth group to take up- to get young people thinking and participating in the ever day workings of the Assembly. This should also be a way in which, of course, pressure groups and community groups can put forward their messages to us.

Rhodri Morgan is speaking again, now about reconfiguration. I think that this will be discussed quite often in the next few weeks. Will Labour go back on their reconfiguration programme, and impose a moratorium, or will they carry on regardless? I think that it will depend on whether or not this progressive, consensus politics really will work. It's entirely up to Labour as to whether they are serious about it or not.

Blogging in the Chamber? Is that allowed?

Is this the first ever bit of live blogging from the Senedd? Well done if it is!

There seemed to be quite a few people having difficulty with keyboards (and the systems) from what I could see on the tele. Was there no training given before hand?

Another thing that struck me was the way that some AM's were typing - some not even using 2 fingers! There'd be a huge increase in productivity and efficiency if people were trained to use the expensive tools that were made available to them.

Good luck with the challenges

Well, the petition by text/email is exciting but I do feel very sorry for Dafydd El! You'll just see the ones he chose - Dafydd will have to wade through a lot of rubbish. Not that the electorate are stupid, just that there are a lot of silly b*ggers out there!

I'm sure Peter Black and glyn must have done live blogging, or they might just have blogged.!
We did have training, but to be fair there was a lot of mishaps on the day that wasn't anybody's fault!

cymro- there is a possibility that there will be petitions committee, and nothing will just be oked by Daf El, it will have to have wider support than that. I spoke to him yesterday about it, and to be fair, he's really excited about getting people involved in the process.

ordovicius- why wouldn't it be allowed? Peter Black and others did it all the time in the last Assembly so I'm told;-)
Is this just another way of criticising?!

Not at all. The idea of AMs blogging in the Chamber just brings to mind images of schoolkids reading comics behind desks during maths. Ive always wandered what AMs did with their computers there. Especially when Brian Gibbons is giving a speach.

Bethan,

Live blogging is a good idea, would not work for me, because I am too easily distracted.

Congratulations.

When did you actually click the publish button?

Are their any rules within the Senedd chamber about AMs using their computers?

Are their any similar rules at Wetminster, eg can MPs take their laptops into the House?

silurian, i will link to you asap

mike- I gather there are some sites that you can't access in the chamber. you cant take any other electrical items in- eg phones, and I would assume laptops would be excluded. Everyone can see your screen from the public area, so one must be careful!
