Women in Politics

Read this blog on OurKingdom which shows a map of women representatives in politics in Britain. There hasn't, shock horror, been much progress on a Westminster level of equal representation. Lib dem and Tory represtentation as MPs is still shockingly low.

The Assembly has been a shining light in terms of gender balance, but for how long, time will only tell.

We have more Women MPs than Plaid do, even on a Welsh level.

What happens when there are more women than men? Will there be men only shortlists? This isn't really democracy, isn't it? What is wrong with a system where people put themselves forward as a candidate, then democratically elected by their local party to stand for their constituency, and then standing for parliament in a democratic election? Shouldn't everyone have the same opportunity to go before their local party to fight an election. It's what I think is called positive discrimination!

Nobody seems to read this childish teenage web site - evidenced by the lack of comments - most comments come from the AM Blogger herself. I'm a constituent and I think I'll stop peeping at it because of its childish Student Union type banal content - my advice is "grow up Ms Jenkins"..

At least we have some progress.
Less than a hundred years ago, there were no women in politics, nor even at the ballot box.
Religious observance was part of the national curriculum, and there were few controls over wages or working conditions.
Cambridge university, in 1947, finally awarded a degree to a woman, for the first time.
As far as I know, no woman ever started a religion, or a world war, both being abusive abominations, both being the work of men.
Right then, I`ll get my hat and coat, and I`ll be off.
