Blog against Sexism Day

Today is blog against Sexism Day. This has been launched as a way to raise awareness of the issue on International Women's Day. Today in Wales the Equal Opportunities Commission has released its annual review. It states that women are still treated unfairly in the workplace as one of the 6 key areas of their report:

Equality at work - 'Women in Wales are concentrated in low- pay, low-skill sectors of the economy. The pay gap is narrowing much too slowly and almost half of pregnant women have suffered job or pay cuts, demotion or sacking. As a result of all this, women are poorer in old age.'

Sexism in the workplace remains a problem that faces many women in the context of the debate on equality at work, and is often a barrier towards development or promotion.

At the end of 2006, a survey of 2,067 female employees by legal services firm Peninsula found that women feel more victimised in the workplace than when they last took the survey in 2002. Sexism in the workplace, from this report, seems to be increasing, with almost three out of four (72%) women claiming they have been bullied because of their gender.

Women also earn nearly 26% less than their male counterparts- an important issue that needs to be taken much more seriously by the National Assembly if we want to create a truly equal society.

As a National body, the National Assembly can take pride in the fact that there are more women Assembly Members than men. Nevertheless, the Assembly must reflect this positivity in its policies. Plaid Cymru for one are pledging to double the child care budget when in Government, improving support for carers- most of whom are women, and of seriously tackling the pay gap issue here in Wales.
