On the subject of Blairism, we should all note that this was John Prescott's last appearance at the dispatch box. I, for one, think we should mourn this great loss to politics. He was a masterful politician and a powerful statesman. We will remember him as a great thinker and a powerful speaker.
Tell me what Blairite policy you would repeal then? and i mean what his government delivered, not the origin of the idea. Remember i am talking about things you would REMOVE, not things you disagree about.
Minimum wage? yes or no? Devolution? yes or no? Northern Ireland? yes or no? Family tax credits? yes or no?
I am sure you will point to Iraq, but then what is your policy on that now? Immediate withdrawal? Its not hindsight politics now.
Excuse me, marcusian. This is the man who's moved closer than any other prime minister to privatising the NHS. We were protected from his stupid academies by devolution - a policy inherited from John Smith. The minimum wage and tax credits came from years of lobbying, and were introduced by Brown! Even then, economists are divided as to it's role in reducing inequality.
The legacy of Blairism is more violent crime, an agressive foreign policy, and an economy which has become worthless - in that a service economy can never be a healthy one. He pledged to end child poverty and inequality; child poverty policy is floundering and inequality is higher than at any time since 1961. He has promised to make poverty history - but what he gives with one hand, he takes away with the other. Show me a single Blairite policy, that was not inherited from John Smith, that has reinforced social justice here or abroad.
marcusian- you only list the positives yourself. Is there a reason for this?
Minimum wage- good, but needs developing. Devolution- Labour can't take ALL the credit for it, although they are supportive....time will tell whether that will remain the case ( see Scotland!) Northern Ireland- again, I would beg to differ that this is a credit due to New Labour. Having written my dissertation on this issue, I could be here all day explaining why exactly British involvement has actually hindered developments.
Failings of New Labour-Iraq,Cutting single parent benefit, PFI, 3.4 million children continue to live in poverty, trident, identity cards, centralising public services agenda, right to buy extended to tenants, top-up fees.....

he he. I remember the late Linda Smith saying "I don't think language is his first language." :)
Well, we just learned, from the reliable source that is Geogre 'Dubya' Bush, that Blair is not a poodle, but has a dogged style of leadership. I'm not really qualified to certify Blair's canine qualities, but I do wonder what happened to this doggedness when it came to ensuring the existence of WMDs in Iraq.
One thing's for sure - Blair has pursued his aggressive foreign policy ever since entering Number 10. Proverbs 26.11: As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly..
